  1. A Spirit Of Religion, Tradition And Murderous Spirit :

    • Jesus attacked by a murderous spirit of religion and tradition. (Luke 4:28-30; John 8:59)
    • Saul under a murderous spirit of tradition and religion. (Acts 8:3; 9:1-2)
    • Judaizers — a spirit of religion, tradition, and lying spirit. (Acts 11:2-3; 15:2)
    • Jews attacking Stephen under a murderous spirit of religion and tradition. (Acts 7:57-59)
    • Barnabas and Paul attacked by a murderous spirit of religion and tradition. (Acts 14:5)

  2. A Spirit Of Idolatry, Divination And The Occult :

    • Followers of the goddess Diana — a spirit of religion, a spirit of idolatry, a spirit of violence. (Acts 19:23-41)
    • Barjesus, sorcerer and false prophet: lying spirit, son of the devil, enemy of righteousness. (Acts 13:10)
    • Slave girl — spirit of divination (Acts 16:16-18). The spirit came out in the name of Jesus.
    • The city of Athens — a spirit of idolatry — no church started in that city. (Acts 17:16)
    • The northern tribes of Israel following after Baal and Asherah. (1Kings 18:18-19; 2Kings 9:22)
    • The temple in Jerusalem: the people worshiping idols before its destruction in 587 BC. (Ezekiel 8)

  3. More On The Spirit Of Idolatry, Divination And The Occult :

    • The Ten Commandments prohibits the making of any idols or the worship of them. — Deut. 5:8-9, Lev. 26:1

    • Regarding the occult: “A man or a woman who is a medium or who has familiar spirits shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones.” Lev. 20:27
    • Things of the occult include: mediums or those who contact the dead, palm reading, horoscope, yoga and meditation using a mantra word, Santeria, Voodoo, witchcraft, mother earth mystics, and all kinds of paraphernalia dealing with the occult and the devil.
    • A spirit of idolatry: It does not necessarily have to be a carved image. It can be an “idol” of our own making: e.g. sports, stuff, political/religious/movie personalities, television, electronic gadgets, car, boat, house, career, family, etc. An idol is anything that consumes your thoughts, emotions, and time; and in a sense, it is worshiped more than the Almighty God. Anything like this can be a “god” before God.
